Writing. It’s not only good for the soul, it’s a gift to be used wisely.
As journalists, our job is to tell powerful and meaningful stories. If done right, they can spark change, they can elicit emotion, and even share perspective.
In broadcast, we get to marry strong visuals and even greater words.
In television, you can see the images on a screen; but as an author, our role is to show the viewer what they can’t see. Crafting the elements that can’t be picked up by the naked eye.
It’s our responsibility to capture the moments and feelings that don’t make it on video.
Whether it’s devastating floods in eastern Kentucky or overcoming personal struggles with addiction there’s always a message. A lesson to be taught and something to think about.
As a multimedia journalist, I’m tasked with balancing and juggling several elements all at once. It can be tough and challenging. Especially with limited time and scarce resources. But with the right words, you can still tell a memorable and lasting story.
I think the key, is incorporating the organic and natural sound.
While I’m driving back from a shoot, I spend most of the commute ruminating over the biggest takeaways. What stood out to me about the conversations? What were the lasting impressions? What do people at home need to know about this situation?
Each person, that opens up and lets us in, who allows us to tell their truth, their experience, deserves the very best work I can deliver.
I treat every story with care. Each line and sentence is cultivated with purpose and precision because every word matters.
The right ones can make all the difference.
