Pack the Lobby for Mission of Hope

It’s a new holiday tradition to help to spread Christmas cheer to children in one of the most impoverished parts of the country.

By encouraging viewers to help WKYT “pack the lobby” of its landmark building, thousands of toys, clothing items, hygiene products, and other items for the Mission of Hope.

Since 1996, the non-profit has ministered to the people of various counties in Kentucky and Tennessee, from which 80 percent of the region’s residents no longer have jobs in the coal mining industry.  Donations raised by WKYT were sent to 30 Kentucky elementary schools that serve over 15,000 students and their families.

“A lot of the children tell us that we are the only Christmas that they get when we come to their schools,” Mission of Hope Executive Director David Heatherly said.  “Just the idea to bring a little bit of hope back into their lives. A hope that people care about. A hope that Christ cares about.”

The year-round ministry assists also assists less fortunate Appalachian neighbors with much-needed goods and resources; college scholarships; and help with basic educational, health care, and home repair needs.
